Long Jack, warrior with boomerang
Long Jack, warrior with boomerang.
Richard Brown was transported to Australia in 1811. He completed his sentence in 1817 and took up residence in Sydney. He specialised in drawing aborigines and local fauna for overseas visitors Several versions of the same aboriginal portraits are held by the National Library of Australia, evidence that Browne recreated his most popular drawings depending on demand. Another version of this drawing is held by the National Library of Australia.
This drawing demonstrates exactly the same technique, and the same handwriting in the legend as the drawings held by the National Library of Australia. This drawing must have been purchased by one of the crew of the Uranie during its 1819 stopover in Sydney. The legend written in French was added in Sydney at the same time.
